VO2 Max pre-exercise screening

A VO2 Max test asks you to work to your absolute maximum. This screen confirms it is safe for you before we put you on the bike or treadmill. Most people finish it in about three minutes.

This screen is based on the Adult Pre-Exercise Screening System (APSS). No warranty of safety results from its use and it does not guarantee against injury. Precision Body Lab accepts no liability for any loss, damage or injury arising from any person acting on information contained in this system.

Health questions

Answer every question. A yes does not mean we cannot test you. It means our exercise scientist reviews it first, and in some cases asks your doctor to sign off.

YesNo
1. Has your medical practitioner ever told you that you have a heart condition or have you ever suffered a stroke?
2. Do you ever experience unexplained pains or discomfort in your chest at rest or during physical activity or exercise?
3. Do you ever feel faint, dizzy or lose balance during physical activity or exercise?
4. Have you had an asthma attack requiring immediate medical attention at any time over the last 12 months?
5. If you have diabetes (type 1 or 2) have you had trouble controlling your blood sugar (glucose) in the last 3 months?
6. Do you have any other conditions that may require special consideration for you to exercise?

What has changed since your last test

You completed the full screening last time, so we only need to know what is different. If anything has changed we will ask you the full set.

YesNo
1. Has there been any change to your health, your medication or a new injury since your last test with us?
2. Have you had surgery, a serious illness or a hospital admission in the last three months?
3. Have you had a cold, the flu or a fever in the last seven days?
4. Are you pregnant, or could you be?

Your current training

Your normal week, not your best week. This sets your starting workload so the test is neither too easy nor too aggressive.

IntensitySessions per weekMinutes per session
LightYou can talk easily and breathing barely changes
ModerateYou can hold a conversation but you are working
Vigorous or highTalking is hard or impossible
0weighted minutes per week
Sessions multiplied by minutes. Moderate counts once, vigorous counts twice, light does not count toward the 150, in line with the Australian physical activity guidelines.
How to judge intensity
  • Light. 40 to 55 per cent of max heart rate. No noticeable change in breathing. You could keep going for an hour or more.
  • Moderate. 55 to 70 per cent. You can hold an uninterrupted conversation. Usually 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Vigorous. 70 to 90 per cent. Conversation cannot be maintained. Usually up to 30 minutes.
  • High. 90 per cent or above. Talking is very difficult. Rarely longer than 10 minutes.
